Zias struggle against Cameron

Freedom New Mexico

DURANT, Okla. — Bad early innings did in the Eastern New Mexico University softball team on Sunday.

Cameron scored five times in the top of the first en route to a 10-1 victory over the Zias, then Southeastern Oklahoma turned a throwing error by catcher Michelle Anderson into six unearned runs in the second inning and a 7-0 victory in the Lone Star Conference crossover tournament.

Melissa Bour hit a two-run single, Chelsey Jordan belted a two-run double and Whitney Richardson added an RBI triple as Cameron chased ENMU starter Natalie Woodside (6-11) in the first inning.

The Zias (17-22) scored what turned into their only run of the day in the bottom of the second when Rebecca Quinones singled, then pinch-runner Amanda Terry stole second and came around on two groundouts.

Jordan added a solo homer in the fifth, and she, Richardson and second baseman Courtney Clifford all finished 3-for-4 as the Lady Aggies (25-21) pounded out 16 hits. Meantime, the Zias had just three hits off Ashton McBride (17-11), who went six innings, and Sherry Tetreault.

They struggled even more in their second game against host Southeastern as the Savage Storm’s Marjorie Johnson (17-2) carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh. Alex Mayo Otis legged out a one-out infield single to give ENMU its only hit off Johnson, who walked three and struck out nine.

Southeastern (34-5) got a run-scoring double from Ashley Graham in the first before breaking it open in the second in the second. The Savage Storm finished with 13 hits off Zias sophomore Kristen Cruickshank (7-8), who went the distance and blanked Southeastern on five hits over the final five innings.

ENMU finished 2-5 in the three-day event after winning its first two games on Friday. The Zias are back in action on Friday with the start of a two-day tournament hosted by Oklahoma City University.
