Peanut Growers to meet

The New Mexico Peanut Growers Association will hold its annual meeting at 10 a.m. Friday at the Memorial Building in Portales, according to a press release.

Maria Fenn of the National Peanut Board will provide an update on peanut industry developments. A representative of the New Mexico State University Research Station will report 2007 research results, Ted Higginbottom, president of Western Peanut Growers, will talk about the farm bill and Tom Sells of the Southwest Council of Agribusiness will report on that group’s efforts in Washington.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Peanut growers, as well as other farmers and persons interested in the latest developments in the industry or the farm bill in general are invited, according to the release.

Senior Olympians competing

Over 50 senior athletes registered to compete in the local Senior Olympic games. The opening ceremony was held at 3 p.m. Monday at Los Abuelitos De La Casa Buena Salud.

Roosevelt senior citizens compete in local games to qualify for a trip to New Mexico State Senior Olympics at Las Cruces.

Six athletes have qualified already for the state games after competing in the pool tournament Monday morning. The competition will run until Saturday and the events will be capped off with a closing ceremony at 4 p.m. at Furr’s Cafeteria in Clovis.

“The games are held to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to the seniors,” said Lupe Montoya local Senior Olympics coordinator. “We are holding the events at different locations across town to promote the event to the community.”
