As the Democratic candidates duke it out in what is becoming a surprisingly long and bitter nomination process, Republican nominee John McCain should be shoring up his base and expanding his appeal in preparation for the general election.

But perhaps the McCain campaign and many of his supporters are putting too much stock in a recent poll showing the Arizona senator well ahead of either Democrat.
