No. 25 Rams romp to win over Hounds

SAN ANGELO, Texas — First baseman Clay Calfee went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Kenny Elkind pitched six shutout innings Thursday night as 25th-ranked Angelo State routed Eastern New Mexico 12-1 in the opener of a four-game Lone Star Conference baseball series.

The Rams (23-8, 17-4 LSC) pounded out 15 hits, breaking the game open with a six-run fourth highlighted by Calfee’s bases-loaded triple off Seth Clabaugh (3-3).

Elkind (6-2) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five in his six-inning stint, turning the game over to the bullpen with an 11-0 lead. The Greyhounds (15-11, 9-8) broke through for their lone run in the seventh when Paden Vendrely hit a one-out single, moved to third on a balk and a groundout and scored on Mitch Wolfe’s single to center.

Calfee added a two-run homer in the sixth off reliever Jonathon Wise. Designated hitter Don Carter hit a pair of RBI singles for the Rams, while catcher Trey Carter went 3-for-3 and left fielder Clayton Farhat added 2-for-4.

Left fielder Clayton Young was the only ENMU player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4. The Hounds finished with seven hits in dropping their third consecutive game.

The teams are scheduled to play at 3 p.m. (MDT) twin bill today, then close the series with a nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
