Wayland Baptist tops ENMU in 10th

PORTALES — Catcher Brett Sheppard went 5-for-6, including a home run and a 10th-inning, go-ahead RBI single, lifting Wayland Baptist to an 11-8 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday night at Greyhound Field.

Sheppard hit a two-run homer in the first, his fifth of the season, and led a 21-hit attack for WBU (26-4-1). Right fielder Todd Jeffress went 3-for-4 while designated hitter Keith Martin and second baseman Brett also had three hits.

ENMU (15-10) pounded out 17 hits, with DH Freddy Carmona going 3-for-5 and five others collecting two hits apiece.

Including a 3-0 record on neutral fields, the Pioneers (26-4-1) improved to 20-1-1 away from home this season. Wayland closer Mario Canales (1-1) surrendered the lead by giving up three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but got the win with Jeffress, the team’s top starter, taking over in the bottom of the 10th to earn a save.

ENMU trailed virtually all night. The Greyhounds erased a three-run deficit with three runs in the bottom of the first and tied it again in the second when Kevin Thompson scored on a wild pitch.
