Hound baseball splits with Cameron

Freedom New Mexico

LAWTON, Okla. — Eastern New Mexico University’s Freddy Carmona hit a tie-breaking, two-run double to key a four-run ninth that lifted Eastern New Mexico University past Cameron 15-13 Saturday in the first game of a Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader.

The Aggies won the seven-inning nightcap 4-0 to earn a split for the day and take a 2-1 lead in the four-game series. The teams play a nine-inning game at noon (MST) today.

After Cameron scored seven in the first in the opener, senior second baseman Tyler Hayes blasted a grand slam in a seven-run second for the Hounds. A bases-loaded walk to designated hitter Ethan Wagner pulled ENMU even 11-11 in the eighth.

The Aggies (11-8, 5-6) scored twice off ENMU closer Keith Balderaz in the bottom of the ninth, but he got Kevin Mentel on a grounder to second to end it with the tying runs in scoring position.

In the nightcap, Cameron’s Brad Bichel scattered four hits and struck out seven and the Aggies broke a scoreless tie with a three-run fourth, capped by designated hitter Nate Arevalo’s two-run single off Evan Orsak.
