Aggies nip Hounds in opener

Freedom New Mexico

LAWTON, Okla. — Pinch-hitter Josh Mathieson led off the bottom of the 10th with his first home run of the season, giving the Cameron Aggies a 4-3 Lone Star Conference baseball victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday in the opener of a four-game series.

Mathieson’s blast made a winner of reliever Bevan Anderson (3-2), who replaced starter Cody Dillon in the seventh when the Greyhounds (8-5, 2-3 LSC) scored twice to take a 3-2 lead.

Cameron (10-7, 4-5) jumped on ENMU’s Ismael Solis for two first-inning runs on four-hits, but the right-hander settled down and blanked the Aggies over the next six innings on just four singles.

Tyler Doughty (1-1) got the first two hitters out in the Cameron eighth, but two singles and an error by shortstop Sean Cruce allowed the tying run to score.

The Hounds got on the board in the fourth when Clayton Young singled to left, stole second and scored on Derrick kennedy’s single to center. It stayed that way until the seventh when Seth Clabaugh singled, Jeremy Johnson drew a two-out walk and both scored on third baseman Blake Watson’s two-base throwing error.

The teams play a noon (MST) doubleheader today, then finish out the series with a nine-inning single game on Sunday.
