Name: Garrick Matthews

Job: Online English teacher Portales High School.

Time on job: Six years.

Background: Matthews has a Bachelors Degree from Eastern New Mexico University and a Masters in Education Administration from New Mexico Highlands. He also coaches JV volleyball and JV softball at PHS.

Q. Describe what your job entails?

A. It begins with designing the online course inside the guidelines of the benchmarks assigned by the state of New Mexico. This includes the content, grade assessment; monitoring student’s progress either in the classroom or online using e-mail which is individualized.

Q. What is a typical day on the job like for you?

A. My days usually revolve around two things, developing content for the kids which includes making quizzes, designing reading and writing assignments, and grading papers. With online schoolwork the kids accept a bigger responsibility for their time and effort.

Q. Why did you choose this job?

A. Initially my degree was in radio/TV broadcast and after a couple of years it wasn’t what I wanted to do. So I then got interested in coaching and then enjoyed teaching, I like English, and it seemed more natural.

Q. What type of training, if any, do you need for your job?

A. Matthews said a bachelor’s degree, at the minimum, in education and at least one semester in student teaching.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?

A. The thing I have enjoyed about education two days are never the same. There are always different challenges; different ways of presenting materials, always something different.
