County spelling bee on Saturday

Clovis schools spelling bee winners will face off with other spellers throughout the county on Saturday at the Curry County Spelling bee.

The contest will be held 9 a.m. at the Clovis Community College Town Hall auditorium.

About 17 spellers will compete in the Amarillo Globe News-sponsored event, according to coordinator Judy Benitscheck.

Eligible contestants are students from schools in Curry County, Benitscheck said.

Participating schools include Texico, James Bickley and Lockwood Elementary schools, Yucca Middle School, Clovis Christian School, Melrose, Grady schools and Texico Junior High School.

Senior spellers are from the sixth through and eighth grade, she said.

The Senior spelling bee winner will receive a CCC scholarship and will advance to the March regional spelling bee in Canyon, Texas, according to Benitscheck.
