Portales man dies in car crash

A 19-year-old Portales man died in a two-vehicle accident Thursday evening, police said.

Travis Freeman, a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his wife, died at the scene, according to State Police Lt. Ron Chavez.

Jezika Shumate was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Chavez said.

The accident occurred around 6:55 p.m. at the intersection of N.M. 236 and North Ave. O, according to Chavez.

Chavez said Shumate was driving a Chevrolet Corsica north on Avenue O. When the Corsica drove onto N.M. 236, it was struck on the passenger side by a Ford Ranger driven by Tomas Sullivan, 17, of Portales, Chavez said. Sullivan was westbound on N.M. 236, Chavez said.

Sullivan did not have any apparent injuries and declined medical treatment, Chavez said.

The accident is under investigation, and no citations have been issued, Chavez said.
