Hounds win twice in tourney

MIDLAND, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team pounded out 32 hits in beating Schreiner 15-8 and Sul Ross State 17-3 Friday in the season-opening UT-Permian Basin Classic.

The Greyhounds needed a seven-run eighth to beat Kerrville, Texas-based Schreiner in a game played at Citibank Ballpark in Midland. Trailing 8-6, they sent 11 batters to the plate and took the lead on Tyler Hayes’ two-run double. Sophomore Ethan Wagner delivered a three-run, pinch-hit double later in the inning.

Catcher Freddy Carmona blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning and was one of five Hounds to collect a pair of hits in the contest.

Freshman right-hander Jonathan Wise picked up the win with four innings of one-hit shutout relief. He walked one and struck out five.

The Hounds had no trouble in their second game, played at Permian Basin’s Roden Field in Odessa. They blew out Sul Ross behind an 18-hit attack that included three knocks apiece from left fielder Clayton Young and Carmona.

ENMU jumped on Lobos starter Michael Otero for three runs in the top of the first and scored in every inning of the match, shortened to seven innings by a 10-run rule in effect in the tournament after seven innings.

Junior right-hander Evan Orsak went the distance for ENMU on a seven-hitter, walking one and striking out three.

The Hounds complete the event today with a pair of bames at Citibank Ballpark. They face Howard Payne at 9 a.m. (MST) and host Permian Basin at 4 p.m.
