Alcohol petition turned in to city

A group that wants city residents to vote on allowing the sale of alcohol by the glass on Sundays turned in its petition by the Friday deadline, according to City Clerk LeighAnn Melancon.

The County Clerk’s office has until this Friday to verify signatures on a petition, Melancon said. She said the Clovis the group, which calls itself Clovis Progress, needs 725 signatures from register voters in Clovis, or 10 percent of voters in 2006 General Election, to get the issue on the March 4 municipal election ballot.

Melancon said there were 25 sheets of signatures turned in with the possibility of 20 signatures to a page.

Clovis Progress spokesperson Robin Howe said last week his group has collected about 2,000 signatures from patrons of Clovis restaurants.

Last year, the group circulated a similar petition and submitted 875 signatures, however, only 575 were valid.
