Vet refurbishes medical equipment

Freedom New Mexico: Thomas Garcia James Freeman is a veteran who collects medical equipment, repairs it and distributes it to the disabled.

James Freeman calls it his “Aid to the Disabled Program.”

“James originally started the program to collect medical equipment for disabled veterans,” said Keith Barker acting exalted ruler for the Elks Lodge 1244, which helps sponsor Freeman’s efforts.

Freeman has been collecting, repairing and distributing medical equipment that has been donated by individuals and businesses.

“He is not doing this just for veterans but all disabled people in need,” Barker said.

Freeman, a Clovis resident, said he began the program three months ago, giving out more than 200 mission statements to help spread the word for his cause.

“I myself am a veteran who was injured and disabled after leaving the service and my left leg was amputated,” Freeman said. “I am working to help other disabled and handicapped people around the area.”

Freeman said he has collected and distributed 27 pieces of equipment to people living in Clovis, Portales and Tucumcari.

“My goal is to have the program expand as far north as Clayton, all the way down to Hobbs,” Freeman said.

Freeman encourages donations, no matter the condition of the equipment.

“I can repair a lot of the equipment and if it can’t be repaired the parts can be salvaged,” he said.
