Dixie State notches win over Zias

DURANGO, Colo. — Sophomore center Dani Newell hit the go-ahead free throw with 52 seconds left and Dixie State outlasted Eastern New Mexico University’s women 81-76 on Friday night in the second game of a season-opening, three-team round-robin.

Junior forward Jessica Carver led four Rebels in double figures with 24 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. Dixie State shot a modest 40 percent from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, but sank 36-of-48 free throws to 12-of-21 for ENMU (0-2).

The Zias, who lost to host Fort Lewis 78-64 on Thursday, were led by 11 points from freshman forward Cat Clay and 10 points from freshman guard Tori Northcutt.

ENMU trailed most of the game, but rallied late in the first half to open a 34-28 lead. The Rebels (1-0), who play Fort Lewis tonight, responded with a 17-5 run over the final five minutes of the half for a 45-39 advantage.

Dixie State expanded its lead to 11 points on three occasions in the second half, but the Zias pulled even 76-76 when Carissa Krum hit a 3-pointer with 1:06 left.

After Newell’s free throw, a basket by Denny Phommabout and two free throws by Jessica Jones clinched the win for the Rebels.

Newell finished with 12 points, Phommabout added 11 and freshman forward Brandi Barrett contributed 10 for Dixie State.

The Zias open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday night with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against New Mexico Highlands at Greyhound Arena.
