Arrest made in CUB burglary

Eastern New Mexico University Police Department officers arrested a suspect last week in the October burglary of the Campus Union Building.

According to police reports, Frankie J. (Flaco) Martinez, 27, was arrested shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 8 at 813 W. University Drive.

The suspect broke three windows to gain entry to several offices in the building, including the Cultural Affairs office suite, where a Native American crown and other artifacts were taken, according to police reports. Vendors at the Peanut Valley Festival that weekend also reported cash and items stolen.

ENMU President Steven Gamble said some jewlery were recovered but not the crown.

After being given permission to search the house by a resident, Martinez was found hiding under a bed. He was charged with commercial burglary and larceny over $2,500.

Witnesses who had been at 501 S. Ave. G the night of the burglary, said Martinez came to the house with a cut on his arm and several duffle bags full of jewelry and a crown. He told them he had received the cut at ENMU, according to the report.

The report says police took photographs of a scar on Martinez’ arm and sent a DNA sample from the suspect to a lab for comparison with blood found at the scene.

Martinez is in custody at Roosevelt County Detention Center with a $10,000, cash only bond, according to RCDC staff.
