Tractor trailer, vehicle collide

A three-car accident Wednesday morning a mile west of Texico on U.S. 60/70/84 backed up traffic for around three hours, State Police Officer Ramon Borjas said.

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m., Borjas said. There were no serious injuries, he said.

Borjas said a 30-year-old Clovis man was driving westbound in a Dodge Neon when he crossed into the eastbound line and hit a tractor trailer carrying cattle head-on, Borjas said. A Ford van struck the Neon when it came to rest in the westbound lane, Borjas said.

The speed of the tractor trailer and the van were estimated around 60 mph, Borjas said. The speed of the Dodge Neon was unclear, Borjas said.

“He was lucky he survived,” he said. “Usually you don’t make it (in a head-on crash).”

Borjas believes the driver of the Neon was text messaging at the time of the accident, Borjas said.

The driver of the Neon received citations for reckless driving due to driver inattention, no seat belt and no insurance.
