Zia soccer drops from postseason

Freedom New Mexico

DENTON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team saw its bid for a second consecutive berth in the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament come to an end with its second shutout loss of the weekend on Sunday, a 1-0 setback to Texas Woman’s.

The Zias (9-8, 3-6 LSC) fell into 10th place in the 11-team league, with the top six teams qualifying for the tournament. Three teams are tied for fifth at 4-4, but the Zias lost to all three of them and thus would lose any tiebreakers.

Freshman midfielder Kyli Morgan scored the game’s only goal about 9 1/2 minutes into it. Teammate Chastity Hayter dribbled from right to left in the Zias’ end of the field and then dropped the ball back to Morgan, who fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net from about 40 yards.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez made eight saves for ENMU in the contest, while the Zias were held to four shots on goal by the Pioneers (8-8-1, 5-3).

ENMU, which lost at Texas A&M-Commerce 2-0 on Friday, sustained back-to-back shutout defeats for the first time since October 2005. Ten of the Zias’ 17 matches have been decided by a single goal (6-4).

The Zias wrap up their season on Sunday with a noon LSC clash against Midwestern State at the ENMU pitch.
