Freedom New Mexico

COMMERCE, Texas — Senior forward Bailey Geels scored a goal and had an assist Friday and Texas A&M-Commerce limited Eastern New Mexico University to two shots on goal, blanking the Zias 2-0 in a Lone Star Conference women’s soccer matchup.

Gaels was credited with an assist on teammate Meagan Lasley’s goal midway through the first half, then added an insurance goal on a header off a pass from sophomore forward Lacy Alexander with just over 15 1/2 minutes to go.

Commerce (8-8, 4-3 LSC), which snapped a three-match losing streak, stayed ahead of the Zias (9-7, 3-5) in the tightly bunched middle of the conference standings. The top six finishers in the 11-team conference advance to the LSC tournament in early November.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarado had to make just two saves in registering her fourth shutout of the season. Meantime, ENMU senior keeper Stephanie Sanchez earned nine saves.

The Zias face another team they’re competing with for a postseason berth in Texas Woman’s on Sunday in Denton, Texas. They close out the regular season a week from Sunday against Midwestern State at the ENMU pitch.
