October 14, 2007
DENTON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team got close to breaking its losing streak on Saturday, but the Zias faded after forcing a fifth game.
Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder compiled 24 kills and freshman outside hitter Alyson Harlan added 16 kills, 13 digs and nine aces as Texas Woman’s outlasted ENMU 30-15, 25-30, 30-22, 29-31, 15-4 in a Lone Star Conference match.
The Zias (3-20, 0-7 South), losers of 13 in a row and 18 of their last 19, made a spirited comeback late to bail out game 4. Two kills by senior outside hitter Randi Egley helped ENMU forge a 29-29 tie, and the Pioneers (12-9, 4-3) committed two hitting errors to square the match at two games apiece.
Then, leading 3-2 in the fifth game, Schroeder pounded down a kill and freshman middle blocker LyGene Traylor added two more in a 6-0 run that gave the Pioneers control.
Egley matched a season-best with 14 kills for ENMU, while freshman outside hitter Brittney Brame registered a season high with 11 kills. Freshman setter Grace Brandt had 46 assists while junior libero Nicole Vanderploeg contributed a match-high 28 digs to go with two service aces.
The Zias begin a three-match, three-day homestand with a 7 p.m. conference clash on Thursday against Southwestern Oklahoma. They host non-league College of the Southwest at 6 p.m. on Friday before returning to LSC action with a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday against Central Oklahoma.
