Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Name: LaWanda Wortham
Job: Librarian at Brown Early Childhood Center
Time on the job: 11 years
Background: Wortham was a stay-at-home mom, volunteered at the library, attended Clovis Community College, and did substitute teaching.
Q. Describe what your job entails?
A. Ordering, processing and placing books on shelves. I also do lots of repairs on the books and make sure they are in good shape for the children to check out. I also check books in and out, I do daily lesson plans and I teach the children how to handle the books and the parts of books.
Q. What is a typical day on the job like for you?
A. Very busy. The day starts off with bus duty and then helping in two classrooms with intervention, a little bit of planning, and then six classes coming to the library, and sometimes I end it with bus duty.
Q. Why did you choose this job?
A. I love the children and I love books. The staff that I work with is just wonderful. I guess I didn’t know I wanted to do this until I started volunteering and it just flowed from that.
Q. What type of training or schooling do you need for your job?
A. I really think having the library degree made a huge difference. Having the library classes at CCC made this job a lot easier.
Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?
A. The children and watching their faces when you read a really interesting book to them.
