Millions making long holiday trips

Albuquerque — An estimated 34.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Labor Day weekend, most by motor vehicle, according to a AAA New Mexico news release.

That’s about the same number as last year but a drop from the 34.8 million who traveled the 2005 Labor Day weekend, which AAA officials believe indicates Americans are still concerned about the affordability of travel.

“Labor Day has traditionally been a slower holiday weekend for family travel because many schools have already started,” said AAA New Mexico’s regional manager Ana Gonzalez. “But this year families appear to be concerned about the travel costs associated with an end-of-summer vacation, which may mean Americans aren’t canceling previously planned trips but are not planning to travel more than they did last year.”

Fuel prices nationally and in New Mexico are lower than last year, but the national average has risen about 2 cents and the New Mexico average more than 3 cents per gallon the last few weeks, the release reads.

About 85 percent of all travelers this Labor Day weekend expect to go by motor vehicle, and 12 percent by air, AAA said.

The most popular destinations for New Mexicans this holiday weekend, according to a survey of AAA Travel Agents, are:

1) Grand Canyon

2) Las Vegas, Nev.

3) San Diego

4) Disneyland

5) New Orleans
