Roosevelt routs Quay

The rain, wind and lightning didn’t seem to be an issue for the Roosevelt County 9- and 10-year-old Little League All-Stars Monday evening as the Roosevelt County boys threw a two-hitter in shutting out the Quay County All-Stars 10-0 in four innings.

“They all played good,” Roosevelt County All-Stars coach Carleton Casey said.

Roosevelt County starting pitcher Payton Casey allowed just one hit in his three innings pitched and Grant Wagner closed it out in the fourth inning.

The Roosevelt County boys took a modest 1-0 lead after the first inning, and led 2-0 after the second inning, but that’s when Casey says his boys broke it open.

The game was suspended several times because of lightning in the area.

“(The weather) didn’t bother them at all,” Casey said. “I’m real proud of them. We had some real big hits from Luis Valladares and also some real good hits from Jay Faust.”

Roosevelt County posted six runs in the third inning, followed by a run in the fourth to make it a 10-run-rule victory.

“We just finally woke up,” Casey said. “We have a bunch of young kids who have just never played in an all-star game and they’re playing good now.”

The Roosevelt County All-Stars play Clovis Zia Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Zia Field in the tournament’s semifinal round.

“I want to invite everybody from Portales to come watch us on Wednesday at Zia Field,” Casey said.
