Crash victim fights for life

A Portales woman is in critical, but stable condition Monday following a rollover accident near Portales Sunday.

New Mexico State Police and the Portales Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle accident that occurred at 2:37 a.m. Sunday at the crossroads of South Roosevelt Road 7 and South Roosevelt Road T.

According to NMSP Sgt. Steven Mulkey, Portales resident Heidi Best, 22, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The vehicle left the road and rolled 1 1/2 times and ejected Best approximately 55 feet from the vehicle. At the time of the accident, Best was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Mulkey.

Best was transported by ambulance to Roosevelt General Hospital and was later airlifted to NorthWest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.

At the scene of the accident, Best was reported to be in stable condition, though she was unconscious and suffering from head trauma, Mulkey said.

“She’s holding her own right know,” said Sheri Best, Heidi’s mother.

Heidi is suffering from severe head trauma, a lacerated liver and some minor to moderate fractures, said her mother. She also has jaw and facial fractures and a pelvic fracture, though there are no signs of paralysis. She is responding to the treatment and her condition is reported to be critically stable, Sheri said.

“She is in a medically induced coma and they are monitoring her brain pressure through an ICP monitor,” Sheri said.

A nationwide prayer chain has been started for Heidi and family members have established an e-mail account for people to send a funny story, prayers or thought to Heidi. The e-mails will be shared with her in her recovery effort. The address is [email protected]. Put Heidi Best in the subject line, Sheri said.

“We are praying for a full and complete recovery,” Sheri said.

Cards may also be sent to Heidi in care of Portales National Bank, where Heidi is an employee. Since no flowers are allowed in the ICU unit, the family asks that a donation be made to the account.

Portales National Bank has established a fund for Best to help the family cover expenses. Donations will be accepted at any of its branches in Portales, Clovis or Roswell. Donations should be designated to the Roosevelt County General Foundation in care of Heidi Best.
