AARP to hold Day of Service

The Roosevelt County chapter of AARP will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the board room at the Community Services Center, 1100 Community Way, according to a press release.

Each May, AARP chapters across the nation carry out a volunteer activity called Day of Service. This year, the local chapter has chosen the Bonem House to be the beneficiary of its project. The Bonem House is a recently established residential home in Portales for youth with behavioral problems that don’t allow them to remain in the home.

Members are asked to bring donations of recreation or education items or cash to the meeting.

Melrose schools host concert

The Spring Concert, featuring the Melrose Junior High and Melrose High School choir and instrumental ensemble will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Melrose School Commons, according to a press release.

Admission is by donation.

Chamber hosts quarterly luncheon

The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce will host its quarterly luncheon at noon Tuesday at Mark’s Restaurant, 1126 W. First St. in Portales, according to a press release.

Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega Jr. will be the guest presenter and will speak on the topic of air and water quality.

The luncheon is Dutch-treat and open to the public.

Base Planning Commission to meet

The New Mexico Military Base Planning Commission will hold its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at the Clovis Community College, according to a press release. It is open to the public.

The meeting will include an update from the 27th Fighter Wing and the pending transition to the Special Operations mission as well as updates on other bases in the state.

ENMU receives Upward Bound grants

Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will receive $348,146 in grant money for 65 students participating in the Upward Bound program, according to press releases from Sens. Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman.

In addition to the Portales grant, ENMU will also receive $296,327 for 60 students in the program at its Roswell campus. Clovis Community College received $250,000 for 50 students as a part of the $2.22 million in funding for New Mexico schools in the program.

Upward Bound is a college-based program that provides academic instruction for low income, disadvantaged high school students who are in the first generation of their families to consider going to college.
