Spring is in the air and for Eastern New Mexico University, that means a variety of events will be taking place as the Spring 2007 Fine Arts Series winds down.
The ENMU Department of Theater and Dance will present the play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” which will begin on Thursday and continue through Saturday.
Using illusion and fantasy to make it through life, the play focuses on George, a history professor and his wife Martha. The couple invite over new faculty member Nick and his wife Honey. The play proceeds and focuses on the ensuing events that occur over the course of the evening, said director Anne Beck.
“The play is really about the encounter amongst these people,” Beck said.
Also on Thursday evening, the music department will hold a Spring Choral Concert. The concert will take place in Buchanan Hall, located in the Music Building.
The concert will take audience members on a multicultural journey through several countries. The journey will begin in China and will be performed by the Chamber Singers, who will be joined by the Chinese program 1-2-1 students. The three pieces performed in this section will be performed at the Beijing International Choral Festival in July, said Jason Paulk, Director of Choral Activities at ENMU.
“Without them, (the students) I’m sure our diction would not be nearly so authentic,” Paulk said.
The evening will continue with concert performances that will focus on pieces of music from Israel, The Caribbean, Australia, and America. There will also be a session that will include Scottish folk songs, Paulk said.
“In our increasingly diverse and pluralistic society, it is vital that we become familiar with our entire world, including our numerous cultural and artistic similarities and differences,” Paulk said.
Rounding out the month of April will be the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band concert that will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Campus Union Ballroom.
