Severe storms predicted for today

Far eastern New Mexico along the Texas border from Clayton to Hobbs could be at risk this afternoon for a significant severe thunderstorm outbreak, according to the National Weather Service.

The Storm Prediction Center posted a slight risk of severe thunderstorms today in the eastern New Mexico area, with a moderate risk for the Texas Panhandle.

The biggest risk will be storms with large hail and damaging straightline winds, but the pattern may mimic the March 23 event, especially in Texas, according to Warning Coordination Meterologist Keith Hayes. Late afternoon could see big hailers transitioning into storms with shallow and short-lived tornadoes.

Strong winds are expected in the Clovis-Portales area at speeds of 25 to 35 mph, gusting to 50 mph in the area, according to the National Weather Service.
