CHS TENNIS: Robertson spanks Cats

The Clovis High boys tennis team ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday.

The Wildcats were manhandled 8-1 by defending Class 3A state champion Las Vegas Roberton in a dual match played at CHS.

No shame in that, though — Robertson is a traditional power and routinely competes well against schools its size and larger.

“That’s a quality program,” Clovis boys coach Dan Replogle said. “I guess I’m envious because that’s where I want Clovis tennis to be.”

Marlon Wright and Evan Ferguson produced the only win for the Cats, winning the super-tiebreaker for a 6-3, 5-7, (10-4) decision over Max Trujillo and Michael Ortiz.

Except for Devin Aragon’s 7-5, 6-3 loss to Trujillo at No. 5 singles, the Cats managed to take only five games in the other seven matchups.

“I was happy with our effort,” Replogle said. “I thought our effort was generally good.”

The girls’ dual was postponed when the Robertson girls coach, scheduled to drive the girls’ team van, came down ill on Monday night and a replacment driver could not be found.

The next action for the CHS varsity squads is scheduled for March 23-24 in a tournament at Portales.
