Texico advances to semis

RIO RANCHO — Texico’s Faith Martin scored 15 points and Amanda Bass added eight to lead the Wolverines to a 52-27 victory over Eunice on Tuesday in the girls Class 2A quarterfinals.

Texico (25-4) meets Navajo (21-1) Thursday in the semifinals.

Ahead 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, Texico dominated the second period, outscoring the Cardinals (18-9) by a 14-6 margin to lead by 13 points at the half.

“We got off to a slow start, but our defense played well enough that it allowed our offense to relax,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “When our offense came around, we shot the ball real well.”

Leslie Vannatta hit a basket early in the third quarter to put the Wolverine’s up 30-15, but Eunice’s Nakita Pickerel made a jump shot with five minutes left in the quarter to put Eunice within 10 points.

But Texico got a layup from Bass, followed by a long 3-point shot by Bryn Mayfield.

Eunice managed a jumper by Kynzi Davidson with little more than a minute left, but Bass hit another shot with 23 seconds left in the quarter to put Texico ahead 39-22.

Durham said the team showed some nerves early, but persevered.

“There’s no doubt these girls did what they could do and didn’t take anybody for granted,” he said. “I’m very proud of our girls.”

Jennie Pearson scored nine points for Eunice.
