Richards doing the play-by-play. … The Mavericks, who upset top-ranked Mesilla Valley 72-63 in the District 5-2A tournament finals, tend to run hot-and-cold. They won six of their first eight games, then lost eight of 11 but since have gone 8-1. … Top Lordsburg players are 6-4 junior C Miguel Estrada, 6-1 senior C Scott Esquivel and 5-10 senior G Tommy Ray Lopez.

Last game: Portales is coming off an emotional win Saturday in the District 4-3A tournament title game. Junior guard Ky Mitchell hit the game-winning jump shot as the buzzer sounded in overtime to propel the Rams past the NMMI Colts 52-50.

West Las Vegas beat Robertson 55-54 in the District 2-3A tournament title game.
