Hounds' Largent on mend

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s leading scorer missed Saturday’s 78-76 Lone Star Conference South Division home loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville due to an infected right knee, according to ENMU coach Shawn Scanlan.

Senior guard Tristan Largent developed the infection after he banged knees with a West Texas A&M player in a Feb. 5 game, the coach said Monday.

Scanlan said Largent practiced with the team Tuesday through Thursday before his knee swelled up. He was taken to a hospital in Portales and was on IVs from Friday until he was released Monday.

“Luckily for us, and for him, the swelling wasn’t in a joint,” Scanlan said. “It was just under the surface of the skin.”

Largent had started all 49 games since transferring from Garrett (Md.) Community College for the 2005-06 school year.

He led the team in scoring at 13 points per game last season, and this year is averaging 17.5 points — ninth in the Lone Star Conference — while leading the team in 3-point shooting and free throw shooting.

Scanlan said Largent is not likely to play in Wednesday’s South Division home game against Abilene Christian, but could be ready for Saturday’s contest at Angelo State.

The Greynhounds (9-13, 3-5 South) have four games remaining in the regular season in their bid to secure a berth in the LSC postseason tournament.
