Jewelry store robbed

Woody’s Jewelry in Portales was broken into about 9 p.m. Friday, according to Portales Police Chief Lonnie Berry.

The thief broke into the front door of the jewelry store on 117 W. Second St., grabbed two cases from the top of the counter. When a security alarm in the store sounded, the thief hurried out the back, Berry said, and dropped most of the jewelry.

“They left most of it,” Berry said. “We don’t think there’s much gone at this point.”

Berry said a Portales Police officer was only a few blocks away on normal patrol when dispatch was notified of the alarm, and the officer was able to get a description from a person near the scene.

Police are searching for a Hispanic male in his late 20s, ranging in height from 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, wearing a black beanie-type hat and a grey and black quilted flannel jacket, Berry said.

“We were there within a minute of the alarm, but there may have been more people (who drove by and saw more details),” Berry said.
