Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Relay for Life meeting set

An informational meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. today at the Do Drop Inn for area residents interested in participating in the Relay for Life.

The fund-raiser for American Cancer Society is being held Feb. 16-17 at the Greyhound Arena.

The Family Career and Community Leaders of America chapters at Portales High, Texico High and Yucca Junior High School in Clovis are organizing the event for a second straight year.

“That’s why the event is so important, it focuses on families,” said Debbie Stenstrom, PHS FCCLA teacher.

Last year’s event netted $25,000, according to Dorothy Nelson, community relationship manager for the American Cancer Society.

“It is absolutely awesome for something being sponsored and organized by a high school group and their students,” Nelson said.

The meeting will be an opportunity for team captains to turn in registration packets and provide information to those who are or may be interested in forming a team.

Started in Roosevelt County in 2000, the events have helped to raise money that is used to fund research and support programs that are in place to help cancer victims and their families, Nelson said.

“It’s important because every dollar raised benefits every person in your community,” she said.
