Local women earns 2006 AAU award

Jane Miner of Clovis, a long-time volunteer for AAU sports in New Mexico, has been chosen for a 2006 Presidents Leadership Award by the national organization.

She received the award at an AAU convention in Honolulu in October. Miner has spent 21 years working in various roles for New Mexico AAU, most recently as a registrar for a number of sports including boys and girls basketball, wrestling, taekwondo, karate, volleyball, golf, track and field and Chinese martial arts.

Miner, who has worked as a registrar at Gattis Junior High for 14 years, does most of her AAU work out of her home. Around a dozen people across the country were chosen for the award, she said.

Miner said she got involved in the organization when her three daughters participated in AAU programs.

She was nominated for the award by Mike Lujan of Santa Fe, the AAU state wrestling chairman.

“I’m very surprised and excited,” she said of the award. “I spend lots of hours doing it, and I just enjoy it. I enjoy helping kids.”
