Baptists hold annual event

October 21, 2006

The 95th Annual Baptist Convention of New Mexico will be held in Clovis on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Embracing Our Culture” will be the theme for the two-day event at Central Baptist Church.

Former Clovis High School graduate Joseph Bunce is scheduled to preach from the Gospel of Matthew on Wednesday night. Bunce also serves as the executive director of The Baptist Convention of New Mexico.

Bunce said he is excited about coming back to his hometown for the convention. “I was born and raised in Clovis,” he said. “So, I am looking forward to returning.”

Bunce said Wednesday will also serve as a tribute to the military. “It (military) is very important to us,” he said. “New Mexico and the military are synonymous.”

According to a Baptist Convention news release, the purpose of the annual convention is to give New Mexico Baptists an opportunity to worship together, to encourage one another and to make decisions concerning the ministries of the state organization.

Sessions are scheduled at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

While only elected church officials from New Mexico Baptist churches can vote during the meeting’s business sessions, the public is welcome to attend.

According to the news release, the event will include inspirational preaching, Bible studies and dynamic worship.

Jaci Velasquez, an award-winning Christian recording artist, will perform in concert at the convention and present a free concert at Marshall Junior High for teenagers only, according to Bunce.

BCNM President Jay McCollum, who is pastor of First Baptist Church in Gallup, said the meeting will emphasize the importance of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with every culture everywhere in the state.
