Arrests made in homicide

John Cameron, 24, was arrested around 3 a.m. today and charged with an open count of murder, according to Clovis police.

A 24-year-old Clovis man has been charged with murder in connection with Monday’s shooting death of a Clovis teen, according to police.

John T. Cameron, identified by police as the alleged shooter, was arrested about 3 a.m. Tuesday and charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence, Lt. Patrick Whitney of the Clovis Police Department said.

Also arrested Tuesday were Cameron’s mother, Joan Vann, 47, and his stepfather, Ronnie Vann Sr., 54. Each is charged with accessory to tampering with evidence, according to jail officials.

Amos Soliz, 19, was found shot in the head around 2 p.m. Monday in the yard of 817 Sheldon St. when police responded to a 911 call of a subject with a weapon.

Ronnie and Joan Vann reside at 817 Sheldon St., Whitney said. Soliz lived in a duplex at 815 Sheldon St., and the two units shared a common yard, police said.

Cameron’s arrest was the result of evidence seized at his residence and information gathered from witness statements, according to District Attorney Matt Chandler.

“There were multiple interviews conducted by the Major Crimes Unit in addition to evidence seized at (Cameron’s) residence that led us to be able to prepare an arrest warrant,” Chandler said Tuesday. “There have been eye witnesses come forward to give statements,” he said.

Prosecutors will seek an indictment against Cameron in the next 10 days, Chandler said.

At this point, investigators believe Cameron is the only one who will be charged with murder, Chandler said.

Medical examiners discovered a second bullet wound in Soliz’ back Monday afternoon, Whitney said. An autopsy is yet to be performed, he said.

Police said Soliz and Cameron knew each other but would not disclose the extent of their interactions.

Some kind of a dispute led to the shooting, Whitney said, explaining interviews are still being conducted to determine motive and the events leading up to the shooting.

“Nothing at this time leads us to tie this to any gang-related activity — this is not gang related,” Chandler said.

Two vehicles, a green Dodge Neon and a three-tone Chevy Suburban, seen fleeing the scene Monday have been recovered and are being processed for evidence, according to Police Chief Dan Blair.

Police believe Cameron was driving the green car, Chandler said.

Police have not recovered the weapon used in the homicide, Blair said.

Cameron and Ronnie and Joan Vann are being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center. Cameron is being held without bond, while Ronnie and Joan Vann are each being held on a $10,000 cash bond, jail officials said.

About 10 search warrants were obtained for residences in search of evidence, Chandler said.

Police expect more arrests as the investigation continues, Blair said.

“I know they’re looking at several different angles — it will take them a while to put everything together.”
