Club Notes - 7/23

Encanto

Members of the Encanto Garden Club brought sack lunches to the home of Betty Dunlap for an all-day gourd workshop, according to Ruth Burns.

Dunlap raises numerous gourds of all shapes and sizes, which she provided club members for art projects. She also provided patterns, paint and tools from her home workshop. Of particular interest was a new electric tool for precision cutting of the gourds.

Plans were discussed for the flower show at the upcoming Curry County Fair. Members will meet at 9 a.m. Aug. 11 at the fairgrounds to prepare and label the shelves on which participants’ flowers will be displayed.

Members were assigned shifts to work the flower show area during the entering and judging of the exhibits Aug. 14 and 15. Bess Kline will be in charge of judging, which will be 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 15. Categories of flowers and arrangements are detailed in the fair book available at the Curry County Extension Office on Main Street.

The club ordinarily meets at 9:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of the month, but there will not be a meeting in August because of the club’s involvement with the flower show.

For further information, call Betty Dunlap at 762-8212. New members are welcome.

Altrusa

Members of Altrusa International of Clovis met at the home of Lyn Henderson for their annual “Bring a Friend” meeting. Hostesses were Lyn Henderson, Nancy Taylor and Phyllis Davidson.

The group carried in salads and dined in the back yard with 14 members present and four guests. Guests included Ashley Kruse, Cleta Blackburn, Sandra Fair and Dee Black.

After dinner, a presentation was made by Kathy Travis and Phyllis Davidson on the Ranches de Cristo orphanage in Guyman, Mexico.

The club will send funds for school uniforms and will then provide school supplies to the eight children housed there.

Amanda Ashfor and Mary Knowles were initiated into the club by Carolyn Muffley in a lovely ceremony.

Joanne Winslow gave a short performance of song and poetry, and Cleta Blackburn followed with a comedy routine.

Mary Weigl presented each one present with an “angel in a sack.”

The evening was then spent visiting.

The next meeting will be a business meeting Tuesday at Muffley’s Backdoor.

Friendship Rebekah

The Friendship Rebekah Lodge had its meeting July 7 at the IOOF Hall. Serena and Melvin Goar were hostess and host. The meeting subject was Independence Day remembrance.

The auditing committee’s report by Melvin Goar, Wanda Scott and Vicky Howards was given and approved. Revisions in the bylaws were read and voted on. Semiannual reports were given and approved. Serena and Melvin served ice cream and cake after the meeting.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
