Marie Spears

Marie Spears, 101, of Texico died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at her home in Texico.

She was born Dec. 24, 1904, in Springfield, Mo., to W. E. and Laura Maxwell.

She homesteaded in the Melrose area with her family in 1908 and moved to Clovis in 1914. She married L. J. “Roy” Spears in September of 1936 in Clovis. She started harvesting in 1949 with her husband and continued until 1978 or 1979, cooking and supervising with the “Spears Dears Harvest Crews,” according to her family. Family members said she was loved by all, especially her family and grandchildren. She liked to read and tending to her flowers, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Lee and Joe Spears; three daughters-in-law, Marty, Fay and Teddy Spears; four sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jane Broadhurst (and husband, J. R.) of Bastrop,Texas; two sons, Bob and Bud Spears of Texico; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchilden.

Sam Kelley will officiate services.

Burial will be at Texico Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of her friends.
