Hobbs sweeps Clovis

HOBBS — Hobbs scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth on Saturday to hand Clovis a 6-1 loss in the first game of a summer baseball doubleheader.

In the second game, the Eagles scored in all four turns at bat in rolling to a run-rule-shortened 15-3 win over the Wildcats (7-3).

Clovis coach Shane Leatherwood noted that his team’s only three losses this summer have been to District 4-5A rivals Carlsbad and Hobbs.

“We’ve figured out where we need to be,” he said. “We weren’t quite ready today. Hopefully, we’ll be prepared the next time we play them (June 22 at Bell Park).”

Clovis scored in the first inning in the opener when Omar Sosa walked, took third on a single by Parker Wood and scored on Jarod Kiser’s sacrifice fly. Jonathan Ware blanked the Eagles until the fifth when they pushed over the tying run.

Ware went the distance on the mound, allowing 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout. The Cats had four hits, including a double by Ricky Sanchez.

In the second game, the Eagles took a 4-1 lead with a three-run second and never looked back. They broke the game open with an eight-run fourth.

Wood went 3-for-3, including a third-inning home run, Andrew Gilliard added an RBI single in the fifth. Clovis finished with eight hits.

Hobbs collected 14 hits off Wood and reliever Josh Burrell.
