Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

June 4, 2006 Club Notes

The El Portal Chapter of NSDAR (National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution) met May 13 at Clovis High School. Chapter Regent Wanda Dunn presided over the business meeting.

Special guest Sharon Mulrey of Albuquerque presented an informative program about Civil War-era dress. She modeled two dresses she had made, following instructions that were used during the 1860s. The clothing of that era was durable, and the women were innovative in recycling the usable fabric, she said. On display were bonnets, shawls, hose, a hoop form, a corset, undergarments, accessories and other dresses.

Carol Nash and Linda Baldock served hardtack, ginger “cakes,” Johnnie cakes, dried fruit, nuts and tea to complement the program.

The next meeting will be June 10 at the La Tea Da in Muleshoe.

Attendees included Linda Baldock, Jessie Strauch, Carol Nash, Wanda Dunn, Pam Wallace and Sharon Mulrey.
