Samson, Roy

Roy Samson, 59, of Clovis, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 10, 1946, in New York City to Luicle and Henry A. Samson.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his discharge in 1973, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Garden City, N.Y. He became active in the National Association of Letter Carriers union and served as a union representative. He retired in 2002. An active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he was very proud of the fact that he had been sober for 18 years, according to family members. Through the years he had been able to help many people reach and maintain their sobriety, they said. For several years he had invested in older houses that he restored and renovated before reselling. He moved to Clovis about a year ago, and this past year had been important to him, family members said, when he had formed many new relationships.

He was a member of the Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sonny and Richard Samson; and son, Keith Samson.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Samson of Woodridge, N.J., and Darren Samson of Huntington, N.Y.; two sisters, Barbara Bodmer of Ocala, Fla., and Marcella Hoak of Tampa, Fla.; his fiancee, Doris Smith of Clovis, and her two sons, Joey Smith of Dulce and Jimmy Smith of Portales; and his grandchildren, Justin and Carrie Smith.

Scott P. Reeves and Jimmy Smith will officiate.

The members of his AA group along with Glen Busman and John Gardner will be honorary pallbearers.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
