Encanto Garden Club

The May meeting of the Encanto Garden Club was held at the home of Thelma Curtiss with Jaynn Rybolt and Bess Cline as co-hostesses. President Betty Durham called the meeting to order, and Karen Allen read the minutes. Jane Rybolt gave the treasurer’s report and stated that dues will be due next month.

Gayle Strickler reported on last month’s pilgrimage to neighboring plant nurseries. President Durham stated that the tree given to the city of Clovis by the club to celebrate Arbor Day was a desert willow. It was planted at the 14th Street park by park personnel.

In a horticulture report, Jackie Wuest gave information on organic products. She stated that in 2002 the U.S. Department of Agriculture set up guidelines for these products. There are more certified organic farmers in New Mexico than in any other state, she said.

The committee on the flower show at the county fair presented suggestions for themes for the flower arrangements, and two themes were chosen for youth entries and five for adult entries. Clovis-Carver Public Library has requested that the Garden Club give a program in June, and at that time the club will also give information to the public about preparation and presentation of fair entries.

Several members brought show-and-tell items. Door prizes and hostess gifts were presented by Bess Kline.

An interesting program on scrapbooking was given by Melissa Asbury. Members brought photographs and told something about each one.

A brunch of breakfast and dessert items was served by the hostesses. More information on the June meeting will be given at a later date. Visitors and new members are welcome. For further information, call Jackie Wuest at 762-6955.
