Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
Jeffie Whitworth, 89, of Santa Fe and formerly of Portales, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Casa Real Nursing Home in Santa Fe.
She was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Bronco, Texas, to Etha and Jefferson Davis Hunter.
As a small child, she moved with her family to Portales. They built and owned the Traveler’s Inn, a local landmark, which also served as the family home for several years. She graduated from high school in Portales in 1934. She was employed as a secretary at Home Federal Savings and Loan from 1964 until her retirement in 1979. After she retired, she earned a bachelor’s degree. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi. For several years she was an election worker at the polls. Family members said she enjoyed playing bridge and reading. Through the years she had developed deep friendships that sustained her throughout her life, they said. For the past five years she had made her home in Santa Fe to be near her daughters. She was a devoted mother, who always made her two daughters her top priority, according to her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Ann Stratton and Con Tusha.
Survivors include her daughters, Libby Sternberg (and husband, Milt) of Santa Fe and Sissy Othick (Terry) of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Ashlee Othick-Andrews (Sam) of Albuquerque, Brock Sternberg (Rikke) of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Karla Sternberg of Houston; and great-grandchildren, Liva and Ernst Sternberg.
Rev. Harry Riser will officiate services, assisted by Terry Othick.
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Milt Sternberg, Terry Othick, Sam Andrews, John Lorentzen, Scott Reeves and Lynn Tusha will be pallbearers.
Her longtime friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Luke Wesley May, 26, of Taiban died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Muleshoe Area Medical Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1979, in Fort Sumner, he attended school in House.
Family members said he loved the outdoors and hunting. He loved being around people and was a good friend to all, they said, and he loved his children, nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his mother, Peggy Jobe of Tucumcari; father, Joe E. May of Taiban; three sons, Nolan Wesley May of California, Tristan Luke May and Colby Lieb, both of Bartlesville, Okla.; sisters, Penny May of Portales and Kelly May of Clovis; brother, Matt May of Taiban; grandfather, Harry Moore of Tucumcari; numerous nieces and nephews; and fiancee, Jodi Haller of Clovis.
Rev. Sherman Martin will officiate services.
Burial will be at Taiban Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Matt May, Frank Levacy, Brian Nixon, Bruce Nixon, Lance Free and Jay Brown.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
