Mayfield’s Brett Jones parred the fourth playoff hole to beat Albuquerque High’s Joey Gorance for the individual title at the Class 5A boys state tournament Tuesday.

Mayfield, with its four top players all shooting in the 70s on the par-72 New Mexico State University course, won the team title by six shots over defending champion Rio Rancho.

Mayfield posted a team score of 604.

Rio Rancho, the first-round leader, shot 311 — 11 shots more than its first day score and finished at 610.

La Cueva was third at 619 and Sandia fourth at 624.

Clovis senior Jordan Moore shot a 2-over-par 74 Tuesday and climbed 10 places to a three-way tie for sixth.

Moore’s round included a pair of two-putt birdies on par 5s, but a balky putter.

“He hit the ball really solid, but his putter kind of let him down,” Clovis coach George Simmons said. “He didn’t make a putt over seven feet all day.”

Moore shot a first-round 76.

Clovis freshman Tyler Fontenot followed Monday’s 81 with a 79.

Gorance and Jones finished the 36-hole tournament tied with a score of 146. Gorance shot a final round 2-under-par 70 and Jones, who shot even-par on Monday, closed with a 74.

Sandia won the 5A girls title, beating La Cueva by two shots. Sandia finished with a two-day score of 714 to La Cueva’s 716. Mayfield was a distant third at 743.

Ashlee Jones of Manzano was the medalist in the 5A girls competition with back-to-back rounds of 81 (162) on the par-72 New Mexico State course.

Clovis managed to save 11 strokes off its first-round score on Tuesday but didn’t budge from seventh place in the nine-team field.

“We played a little bit better,” Clovis coach Jeff Fontanilla said. “But it was a tough tournament for us.

“We just didn’t accomplish what we wanted to.”

Senior Amanda Estes shot a 99 Tuesday and led Clovis with a two-day total of 197. Whitney Jones and Brianne Bracken each finished at 203.

In the Class 1A-3A tournament, Clovis Christian senior Mollie Peterson tied for sixth after shooting an 89 Tuesday. She was third after a first-round 81.

Socorro won the Class 1A-3A boys title and St. Michael’s the girls.
