Woman sentenced for assaulting officer

A 35-year-old Clovis woman was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in prison for assaulting a peace officer.

Eugena Smith was found guilty of one count of battery upon a peace officer, according to a press release from the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s office.

Smith struck a detention center officer in the face in 2004.

Smith was convicted of second-degree murder in 1992 and escaped from jail in 2000 and is considered a repeat offender, the release stated.

She will be transported to the New Mexico Department of Corrections within the week, the released stated.

Police: Man attempted to entice child into car

Police say a 7-year-old girl was approached Monday by a man who attempted to entice her to get into his car by offering her candy.

According to a press release from the Clovis Police Department, the man driving a white, four-door vehicle approached the young girl at about 1:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of La Luz and offered her candy. The child ran away and told her mother, who contacted authorities.
