Zias rally to take second game
April 1, 2006
ABILENE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University scored three times in the top of the seventh, capped by Tina Whitt’s sacrifice fly, and beat Abilene Christian 7-6 to earn a split of a Lone Star Conference South softball doubleheader.
The division-leading Wildcats (28-8, 10-2 South) rode a three-run fourth to win the opener 4-1.
Brianna Darnell started the second-game rally with a one-out double and took third on Kristina Goodman’s single. Christina Holland’s RBI double made it 6-5, and walks to Jessica Nocas and Elizabeth Whipkey forced in the tying run before Whitt delivered her sac fly to right.
ENMU’s Rosemary Moreno (14-5) finished off a complete-game effort in the circle by setting down the Wildcats in order in the bottom of the inning.
Earlier in the game, Nocus blasted her 10th and 11th homers of the season for the Zias (27-13, 7-3), including a two-run shot in the first. Moreno allowed eight hits, striking out four and walking four.
Outfielders Claudia Stephens and Heather Krumpols each collected two hits for ACU, which took a 6-3 lead with five runs in the fifth.
In the opener, Krumpols’ two-run single gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Samantha Borgeson added a solo home run for ACU.
Jennifer Leal (16-2), who took the loss in relief in game 2, scattered eight hits in a complete-game win in the opener.
