Dewey F. “Doc” Langston
Services: 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Portales.
Dewey F. “Doc” Langston, 85, of Portales, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
Born July 17, 1920, in Palestine, Texas, to Leonette and Cay Langston, he graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1943. He served in the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also served in the Army Reserve.
He married Dessie Rierson on March 7, 1941. He earned a master’s degree from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., and a doctorate from Indiana University. He taught health and physical education and coached at ENMU from 1951 to 1986. He was director of athletics from 1970 to 1975 and acting dean of the College of Education and Technology. He was a member of the Portales Rotary Club, and attended the First Baptist Church. He married Callie Wood on Aug. 24, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, J. B., Denver and Melvin Langston; two sisters, Mildred Medlin and Hazel Allen; a daughter, Jackie Langston-Malone, and his first wife.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Judy Langston and Carol Wood, of Portales; a son, Chris Wood (and wife, Michelle) of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren, Carl Malone of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bryan Malone, J. C. Darrow, Woodrow Wilson II, Dewey F. Langston II, Cara, Caron and Matthew Johnson, all of Portales, and Sarah and Garrett Wood of Oklahoma City; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Langston of Odessa, Texas, and Leslie Langston of Roswell.
Herbert Bergstrom will officiate services , assisted by the Rev. J. R. (Dick) Ross. Burial is at Portales Cemetery.
The family has suggested memorials to the Dewey F. Langston Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, NM 88130.

Eugene Harold Martin
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Portales.
Eugene Harold Martin, 84, of Portales, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at his residence.
Born April 26, 1921, in Afton, Texas, to Minnie Lou and D.X. Martin, he grew up in the Dora area, where he attended school. He married Irene Cox on July 3, 1946, in San Francisco. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater as well as in other capacities. Following honorable discharge, he entered civil service, retiring as an engineering technician in 1971.
He returned to New Mexico where he worked planting seed grass for area farmers. He and his wife attended Emmanuel Baptist Church, and he was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge 26, Scottish Rite, and El Bekal Shriners. For many years, he served as a candidate coach for incoming masons, and in October 2005 was named inspector general honorary of the 33rd Degree Mason in Santa Fe. He enjoyed working his land, and being active in the community and the Masonic Lodge, family members said.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, R.R., T.C. and Wayne Martin; three sisters, Goldie Chaffin, Thelma Townsend and Ila Page, and a son, Larry Martin.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Kenneth Martin (and wife, Sharon) of Springville, Calif.; four grandchildren, Devon, Shawny, Collin and Caylen Martin; two great-grandchildren, Laurel and Sean Temple; and two sisters,: Ethel Mullins and Lois Folkner, both of Portales.
The Rev. Walter Huber will officiate.
