Kennedy, Rex

Rex P. Kennedy of Lubbock, 76, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006.

He was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Muleshoe, to William Gordon Kennedy and Ola Rosalind Page. He attended grammar school at Muleshoe and the family ultimately settled in Grady, where he graduated from high school.

He moved to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech University where he graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in vocational agriculture. He taught high school ag in Canadian, Texas, for two years before pursuing graduate school.

He earned graduate degrees in agriculture economics from Texas A & M University. He served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was a professor of ag economics and director of farm operations at Texas Tech from 1967 until his retirement in 1994. He was president of the Society of Farm and Ranch Managers and Appraisers; he was also a member of the Texas Tech Century Club and the Texas Cattleman’s Association.

He married LaVonta “Bunny” Watson on Dec. 28, 1957, in Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Gordon Kennedy, Jr., and one granddaughter, Katie Annetta Kennedy.

Survivors include his wife; son, Robert Clay of Lubbock; son, Rex Page II (and wife Kellie) of Lubbock; daughter, Leslie Sellers (Travis) of Tomball, Texas; sisters, Virginia Bonifield of Canyon, Texas, and Crystal Elliott of Dallas; and one sister-in-law, Caroline Kennedy of Ruidoso; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. (CST) today at White Funeral Home in Lubbock. Memorial services will follow graveside services at 4 p.m. Wednesday at White Memorial Chapel in Lubbock.
