Arrest made after hostage standoff

A Clovis man was arrested early Friday morning after police said he held his 19-year-old girlfriend captive and assaulted her and a dog, according to Clovis Police Lt. James Schoeffel.

The arrest followed a three-hour hostage negotiation at the victim’s residence at 1113 Prince St. The standoff ended about 4 a.m.

Police say Victor Apodaca, 37, bound the victim’s wrists, put a dog collar around her neck, put her in a closet, cut her face multiple times with a knife, and stuck a syringe into her neck, according to a release from the Clovis police department.

They were arguing over drugs, police said.

The victim was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.

Following a phone conversation with his mother, Apodaca surrendered to police.

Apodaca is being held on a $52,000 bond at the Curry County Adult Detention Center on felony charges of violating parole, first-degree kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault, plus two misdemeanor charges, records show.

Police said they believe Apodaca also stabbed a dog in the home, according to the release. The victim’s roommate told police Apodaca stabbed the dog and then threatened to kill the victim if she called police, the release said.

Apodaca and the victim had been dating a few weeks, Schoeffel said.

Apodaca faces at least 25 years in jail if convicted, said 9th Judicial Deputy District Attorney Fred Van Soelen.
