Zias drop second LSC South game

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State opened a 13-2 lead in less than five minutes and the Rambelles went on to an 82-65 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday in a Lone Star Conference South Division women’s game.

All five Angelo starters scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward Kandra Lakey with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Rambelles (12-4, 3-0 South), shot 62 percent in the second half and 57 percent for the game from the field.

The Zias (8-8, 0-2) put four players in double figures, led by senior post Tiana Bryant with 18 points. Erika Cook added 13, Rosalyn Elliott 12 and Heather Brown 10.

ENMU missed its first four shots and turned the ball over twice before Elliott scored the Zias’ first basket, at the 16:22 mark. Meghann LeJeune scored the next five points, including a 3-point play, to stretch Angelo’s lead to 11.

Eastern closed the margin to 22-16 on Bryant’s basket with 10:20 left in the half, but the Zias went nearly eight minutes without a field goal after and the Rambelles opened a 15-point lead.

ENMU got the margin down to nine points three times in the second half, but the Rambelles broke it open for good with a 13-3 spurt for a 19-point cushion with 5 1/2 minutes to go.

Angelo State limited the Zias to 34 percent field goal shooting on 17-of-50, and dominated the boards 37-23.

ENMU kept the game somewhat competitive by sinking 24-of-29 free throws and forcing 21 Rambelles turnovers.

Guard Ashley King added 19 points for Angelo State, while Britinee Davis scored 12 points and LeJeune and Asheia Haynes finished with 10 apiece. Haynes also had eight assists.

Bryant was ENMU’s leading rebounder with seven, while Brown added four assists.
