Teen dies after weekend shooting

January 15, 2006

A 19-year-old Clovis man found shot in the head early Sunday morning was pronounced dead on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The homicide was the city’s second of the weekend and Curry County’s fourth since Dec. 10.

Police said Wilfred Salas Jr. was found at 3:15 a.m. Sunday in the front seat of a vehicle with a gunshot to the head. He died in a Lubbock hospital early Sunday afternoon. No arrests had been made early Monday.

The weekend’s first homicide occurred about 11 p.m. on Saturday. Police were dispatched to 901 E. Brady in Clovis in reference to an unconscious baby. On arrival, they found 4-month-old Christopher Valdez dead at the residence.

The baby’s death was “suspicious in nature,” police said and a 16-year-old male family member was arrested and has been charged with negligent abuse of a child resulting in death. The suspect is being held at the Curry County Juvenile Detention Center.

The county has seen four homicides in the past six weekends.

• A 30-year-old Clovis woman was found strangled to death north of Clovis on Dec. 10 and an Oklahoma man was shot to death in the parking lot of a Clovis hotel on Dec 24.

Arrests have been made in both of those cases.

Additional details will be reported in Tuesday’s Clovis News Journal.
